“They were right… It did last longer”

Have you ever seen somebody get caught staring and the other person sarcastically says “Why don’t you take a picture it’ll last longer?”?  Well this drawing was based on a play of those words.  I really wanted this piece to be stared at for a while, to take in exactly what i did with it.  This was my first piece to use India Ink. This piece also introduced my first use of Polaroids in an unconventional format. This would begin a long tradition of using polaroids in my artwork, a tradition that still continues to this day.

In the winter of 2007 i went and bought a Polaroid one600 camera, at this point in time Polaroids were a rare sight, with digital cameras being so affordable and easy to use why would anybody use a polaroid that costs roughly $2-3dollars per shot. A ten pack of film cost me an average of $23.00. Not to mention the film was becoming increasingly harder to find (today the film is only available through strange 3rd party online companies). Though it wasn’t cost efficient to use, the thing i love about polaroids is that they can’t be reproduced!  With normal film you can reprint using negatives and with digital cameras you can do what ever you want, but with polaroids every shot is one of a kind and can never be cloned. This is why Polaroids have been soo special to me. They are like a rare and precious gem in the photography world.

This piece started with with me laying down a large inkblot right in the center of my page. Using a straw i blew the ink from the blot down to create what look kind of like a bunch of long legs. Then i took my pen and pulled the ink up in hair like strands. I then created more blots to the right of the page and  made more of the same type of character. I always thought they looked kind of like Alien plants being picked up by the wind and blown away to plant themselves somewhere else. On a separate sheet of paper i cut out the shape of a polaroid and used it to frame my center blot. After that i basically just played around with the ink and tried to get a feel for how it moved. I added the lines to give movement to the background and i added the cliff on the right side to give the plants somewhere to be leaping from. Then came the random scribbling similar to what appeared on my previous drawing “Digging Free From Your Grave… Unearthing Inspiration”.  This type of ink doodling would also appear later in a painting titled “We Must Realize”

On the top left i had traced the outline of another polaroid behind the large curly thing and the pages with writing on them. My intent was to draw a picture inside that outline and create another polaroid.  Instead cut out the frame of the polaroid as if it was really behind those items and I took my only polaroid of a set of painting called “The Botanist, The Zoologist, and The Psychiatrist” and glued it behind the paper. I used the paper i cut out and drew shapes similar to my “Digging Free”… drawing and then i used watercolor to make it match said drawing. I placed this paper on the bottom right corner of the page.

At this point i realized that the only color on my page was on the actual polaroid and on the piece of paper that i cut out to make room for the polaroid. So in a sense the only colors came from “inside” the polaroid. Soo, it was only fitting that i paint just the inside of center Polaroid i had created. There is no significance to the colors i chose but i just felt they brought a balance to a mostly black and white picture.

Check back for more posts describing the process of my artwork.

Today is Free Comic Book Day!  Every year on the 1st Saturday in May is Free Comic Book Day. Usually there is some type of Movie adaptation of a comic book out the same weekend (*cough*cough Avengers) just to get everyone in the mood for comics. There are tons of publishers who put out exclusive free comics just for this day.

We ended up going to two different Comic Book Stores because the Comic we were after was already gone at our first stop Maximum Comics (www.maximumcomics.com) At Max. Comics there were Free Tacos and stormtroopers and while it seemed a bit more organized there was a little bit less of an offering. While at Alternate Reality Comics (www.alternaterealitycomics.net) you could have way more free comics and there were more people in costume. No matter where we were you could tell that everybody was excited about comics.

The best part about this was coming home and having my two boys (ages 6 & 3) be completely into their comics. No fighting and hardly a peep was made. These two boys were reading and just completely involved in the stories in front of them all at the cost of FREE. If you’ve never been to a free Comic Book Day you don’t know what you’re missing. How can you say no to FREE?
